Destroying The Koala's habitat.
The Koala is not a bear but a marsupial native to Australia. Recognized by its stout tailless body and round head with fluffy ears, the Koala is found in the coastal mainland areas of Eastern and Southern Australia.
In one of my very first blogs that I wrote, I detailed how the Koala had appeared to me in one of my meditations and became one of my spirit animals.
During that meditation the Koala had invited me into the forest that it was living in. I journeyed into the forest with the Koala and discovered many more in the trees. I never knew what exactly that meditation meant until I wrote that blog. I discovered that the Koala had a story it wanted me to tell.
I have set out on a journey of discovery. About myself, the universe, ancient ancestors, ancient civilizations, the earth and all of the nature that comes with it. I am sharing the things that I discover during that journey with my readers to help all of us understand more about our Universe. One of my themes is to write the voices of the unheard and that includes the many plants and animals of the Earth. Today, here is the voice of the Koala.
The Koalas' habitat refers to types of bushland that it lives in. It is thought that many millions of years ago, the Koala lived in the rainforest that covered much of Australia. Today they live in tall eucalyptus forests or low inland woodlands. They can only populate in suitable habitats. They need the appropriate trees, soil and adequate rainfall. They live in societies just like us and need an appropriate sized area to be able to interact and survive.
Since the Europeans began to colonize and settle in Australia, nearly 80% of the Koalas habitat has been destroyed. The majority of the remaining 20% of its habitat is not protected and on private lands. This is making the survival of the Koala very difficult and is leading to them becoming endangered.
Savethekoala.com uses this example. Imagine if someone knocked down your home, and most of the houses in your neighborhood. How would you feel to return home and find your house gone and not able to recognize your surroundings? Then imagine how you would feel if there was no shop for you to buy or get food and hunger sets in and eventually starvation.
Koalas are facing these things. Their habitat is being cleared to make new homes, farms, roads, cars, animal attacks, drowning in swimming pools, and just the simple disorientation of their surroundings being destroyed. This is causing them to battle disease and loss of reproduction abilities.
I have found a website that lists all of these issues the Koala faces. It lists the statistics for each issue and simple resolutions such as obeying speed limits and using pool covers. Please visit environment.des.qld.gov.au for more details.
The Koalas are just like many of our own human cultures that have faced the perils of a changing world. Just like European colonialism has destroyed many of our ancestral cultures by taking their lands and over-populating them, the Koala faces the same type of eradication from the Earth.
Each day we continue to destroy more trees, more nature from off the Earth. This does not help us as, just like the Koala, we need these trees to survive. We will be just like them soon, if we are not already there.
This is what the Koala wanted me to share. Not only its story, but also how it resembles the story of other cultures throughout history and is a look into our future as a society if things don't change.
I am happy to share the voice of the Koala, but sad for the battle to survive that it faces. I hope this blog reaches many people and opens eyes to the plight of the Australian Koala. I hope it brings the understanding we need to learn from our past mistakes as a society and prevent those mistakes from destroying our future.
The Destruction of the Koalas' habitat. Bring awareness. Help save the Koala. The destruction of the Koalas habitat. A view of our past destruction of cultures and future destruction of the Earth.
Listen to and share the voice of the Koala.
Blessings!
